“Education in action: Remedial lessons for students affected by the floods in Bushushu and Ntamukubi, South Kivu”

Catch-up lessons for pupils affected by the floods in Bushushu and Ntamukubi, South Kivu

During the months of July and August, the South Kivu I educational province set up remedial courses for students in the villages of Bushushu and Ntamukubi, victims of the recent floods in the Kalehe region (South Kivu).

Simon Zono, the provincial director, explained that this initiative aims to support the pupils who have been directly affected by this natural disaster, by offering them an opportunity to make up for lost time during the holidays. Thanks to the contribution of technical and financial partners, these recovery courses have been set up for a period of one month.

The floods in Kalehe 1 sub-division had dramatic consequences, with the disappearance of 1,012 students and 14 teachers. A total of 33 schools were affected by this calamity, resulting in the temporary interruption of classes. Some schools had to suspend their activities for three weeks, while others were closed for a month.

This situation has had a significant impact on the education of children in the region, and this is why the educational authorities have decided to set up these remedial courses. It is essential to give affected students the opportunity to make up for the accumulated delay and resume their learning in good conditions.

Remedial classes aim to cover subjects that were taught before the floods, in order to allow students to end the school year on a good footing. Teachers are mobilized to support students in their progress and help them overcome the difficulties encountered.

This remedial education initiative demonstrates the importance placed on education in the South Kivu region, despite the challenges it faces. It is essential to ensure access to quality education for all children, even in exceptional circumstances such as natural disasters.

Authorities and education partners will continue to work together to support affected students and ensure they have all the opportunities they need to succeed in their education. These remedial classes are an important step in rebuilding students’ lives after the floods, and will help restore hope and confidence in the future
