Women’s tennis in the DRC is back on the international scene. This year, the women’s tennis Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo will be present at the Group 4 qualifiers of the Billie Jean Cup in Kigali, Rwanda. Five athletes will represent the DRC competing against 10 other nations for qualification to Group 3.
The Billie Jean Cup qualifiers were not accessible for the Congolese last year due to administrative problems such as the late issuance of visas in Skopje, Macedonia. But this year, the women’s tennis Leopards trained seriously under the direction of captain Pave Bokata for their entry into competition.
Congolese athletes competing include Allyson Nancy Onya, Marie Micheline Bosman Agate, Marie-Perla Biansumba, Charlene Watona Bunkuta and Cathy Bolangi. The stakes are high for these athletes and their country as they seek a qualifying spot for Group 3. Other participating nations include Angola, Cameroon, Congo, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Madagascar , Mozambique, Senegal and Tanzania.
In short, Congolese women’s tennis is making a comeback on the international scene thanks to the Women’s Tennis Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This team representing the country is well prepared and determined to qualify the DRC for Group 3 of the Billie Jean Cup
