Economic and political challenges in the Democratic Republic of Congo: summary of recent news

The Fédération des Entreprises du Congo (FEC) in Watsa recently denounced the presence of illegal barriers erected on the main agricultural feeder road in Durba. FEC/Watsa Provincial Chairman Felly Ututu pointed out that this situation has led to speculation in the prices of agricultural products in Durba. Despite this, Ututu also acknowledged that Kibali Gold mining has brought an economic upturn to the region. However, he called for more transparency in the mining company’s procurement process.

Today’s news is marked by the appointment of Pascaline Zamuda as deputy director of the National Housing Fund (FONHAB) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. FONHAB seeks to improve social housing throughout the country and the arrival of Zamuda should help accelerate the achievement of this objective.

At the same time, the BIAC case continues to be talked about. Michel Losembe saw the criminal proceedings against him dropped, but the bank remains in crisis and the economic crisis is likely to worsen in the coming weeks.

The political situation in the DRC remains tense, with growing tensions between the opposition and law enforcement. Violence and arrests are increasing, and many observers are worried that the situation will evolve in a negative way in the coming months.

Finally, Felix Tshisekedi is currently in China to renegotiate the “contract of the century” which binds the DRC to China. The negotiations focus in particular on a fairer distribution of benefits, so that the DRC can benefit more from its natural resources.
