“DRC: The National Assembly votes for the extension of the state of siege in Ituri and North Kivu to counter the violence”

The security crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) persists. And for the 49th time, the National Assembly voted to extend the state of siege in Ituri and North Kivu to allow the defense forces to continue military operations to pacify these troubled provinces. Indeed, the exactions of the militiamen of Codeco, Zaire, Adf and the terrorists of the M23 supported by Rwanda justified this government decision to ensure the safety of the population.

The National Assembly passed the bill with 345 votes for, 16 against and 1 abstention. On the other hand, some deputies from the east of the country expressed their disagreement with the vote without debate. MP Emery Okundji proposed the vote without debate to focus on the main matter, namely the draft law on the distribution of seats. In response, an elected official from Masisi, in North Kivu, expressed his dissatisfaction, considering that it was a refusal to debate an important security issue.

However, a deputy recalled that the State is not managed with feelings. He also pointed out that the security issue in the eastern provinces does not only concern the region, but the whole of the DRC, and therefore, the authorization to extend the state of siege is essential for the security of all citizens. .

In short, the state of siege in Ituri and North Kivu is maintained for the umpteenth time. This situation testifies to the persistence of the security crisis in this region of the DRC and highlights the importance of security measures to ensure peace and security in the country.
