“The security and political situation in the DRC is currently worrying human rights organizations. The Voice of the Voiceless for Human Rights (VSV) has expressed its concerns about the heavy-handed practices of the security services, particularly a few months before the legislative elections scheduled for December 20, 2023.
The arrest of Salomon Idi Kalonda, special adviser to Moise Katumbi Chapwe, candidate for the 2023 presidential election, has been described as a virtual kidnapping by the NGODH. The arrest took place with unacceptable brutality at N’djili international airport. For the VSV, “nothing in a rule of law could justify the inhuman treatment inflicted on him”.
The arrest of Salomon Idi Kalonda comes just days after the brutal repression of demonstrators who are members of opposition political parties. The treatment inflicted on Kalonda has raised questions about the political relentlessness exerted on the opposition and more particularly on the people who represent them.
The VSV calls for an independent investigation to establish the responsibilities and punish the perpetrators of the kidnapping. The international community is closely following the current situation in the DRC, where the fragility of democracy is once again being questioned. To preserve political stability in this country, the Congolese authorities must imperatively guarantee respect for human rights as well as the right to freedom of expression and demonstration.”
