Political tension in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to escalate following the arrest of Salomon Kalonda, a close adviser to Moïse Katumbi. The Minister of Communication and Media, Patrick Muyaya, was recently in Paris for an exclusive interview with France 24. During this interview, he discussed several current issues, including the arrest of Salomon Kalonda, the march of 20 May as well as the current electoral process.
According to Muyaya, violence has no place in democracy and the rules must be respected to consolidate the democratic process in the country. Concerning the arrest of Kalonda, he indicated that the latter had been arrested by the intelligence services, without however expanding on the circumstances of his arrest. Muyaya also referred to the events of May 20, where prominent members of Moïse Katumbi’s party allegedly called for an ethnic attack with predicted deaths, suggesting premeditated violence.
Beyond this tense situation, the Democratic Republic of Congo is also facing other challenges, such as the security crisis in the eastern part of the country and the hotbeds of tension which are increasing as the elections approach. While opponents seek to discredit the ongoing electoral process, the government reaffirms its desire to respect democratic rules to guarantee the consolidation of the country.
Beyond these news, the Democratic Republic of Congo is striving to meet other challenges, particularly in the field of health with the establishment of an African foundation for pharmaceutical technology intended to strengthen the health system. in the mainland. Or even access to drinking water with projects like that of Suez International, committed to the province of Kasai Central.
Faced with all these challenges, the question of whether the approaching elections will indeed be the solution for the DRC remains open. It is now necessary for the government to meet the expectations of citizens, particularly in terms of security and respect for human rights.
