“Arrest of Salomon Kalonda: lawyers are denied access to their client, a danger during an election period in the DRC”

In the news of the day in the Democratic Republic of Congo, we see that the lawyers of Salomon Kalonda have been refused contact with their client, apprehended at the airport, and detained at the Military Detection of Anti-Homeland Activities (DEMIAP). The lawyers rightly complained of not having had the opportunity to meet their client, whereas article 19 of the Congolese constitution gives the right to all litigants to be assisted by a defender, to all levels of criminal procedure, including police investigation and preliminary investigation.

Mr Kalonda’s arrest comes 17 days before the elections are held and is supported by opposition leaders in their fight for the organization of the elections within the constitutional deadline. The recent arrest shows the growing tensions between political forces in the country.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, there are also opposition demonstrations that are growing, while personalities and organizations condemn this arrest. It is therefore a difficult period for the Congolese while the leaders of the nation are in the spotlight.

At times like this, it is important for citizens to remember that justice must be impartial and that human rights must be respected. We must all work together to ensure that our leaders are accountable for their actions and that they work for the well-being of all Congolese. The situation continues to be closely monitored, as it is important to improve security and stability, and to promote peace in our country.
