DR Congo: major security, humanitarian and political challenges. Blinken expresses concern and Tshisekedi in China to renegotiate an economic deal.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to face major security, humanitarian and political challenges. The east of the country is particularly affected by the violence caused by local and foreign armed groups.

US Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Anthony Blinken expressed concern for those affected by the violence in eastern DRC during a phone call with President Félix Tshisekedi on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. The head of American diplomacy reiterated the importance of respecting the ongoing peace processes in the region.

In parallel, President Tshisekedi is currently on a state visit to China to renegotiate an economic agreement beneficial to his country.

Moreover, the political situation in the DRC is also worrying, with a repressed opposition and tensions still present in the run-up to the next elections.

Finally, the government is also working to strengthen the Congolese armed forces to deal with external threats, particularly those from Rwanda.

The DRC therefore faces many challenges, but the government and its international partners continue to work to find lasting solutions to these crises.
