“A record influx of candidates for national deputy in the DRC: Congolese politics in full swing”

Article – News: A record influx of candidates for national deputies in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The extension period for the submission of candidacies for national deputies has recently ended in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has generated unprecedented enthusiasm. The Candidature Reception and Processing Offices (BRTC) were overwhelmed by a massive flow of files, demonstrating the growing interest of citizens in politics and the importance of electoral issues. However, despite this enthusiasm, the number of registered candidates is relatively lower compared to the previous electoral cycle.

A new regulation requiring parties and groupings to submit lists comprising at least 60% of the seats in competition may have limited the ambition of certain political groups. However, this does not seem to have dampened the enthusiasm of all the candidates, and many parties and groups have submitted their candidacies in the hope of representing the Congolese people.

Among the highlights of this race for national deputation, we note the notable absence of Martin Fayulu’s ECiDé party and Joseph Kabila’s FCC group. However, other opposition factions, such as the Matata Ponyo camp and Delly Sesanga, submitted their candidacies, adding to the uncertainty and expectations about the election results.

Now that the candidacy files have been submitted, the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) will have two weeks to examine them and draw up the provisional lists of candidates. These lists will be published on August 9, marking a new stage in the ongoing electoral process.

This massive influx of candidates testifies to the Congolese’s growing interest in politics and their desire to bring about change in their country. National parliamentary elections will play a key role in the formation of the next government and in the further democratization of the country.

It now remains to wait for the final results and to observe the unfolding of the electoral process to see what new political dynamics will emerge in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Congolese people have expressed their voice by submitting a multitude of candidacies, and their choice will soon be known.
