National deputy Crispin Mbindule recently announced his membership of Felix Tshisekedi’s Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS). In an interview with Media Congo Press (MCP), Mbindule justified his departure from the Union for the Congolese Nation (UNC) because of Vital Kamerhe’s allegiance to the Kigali regime.
Mbindule explained that he chose to join the UDPS because of Tshisekedi’s support in the fight against Rwandan aggression, notably the M23 rebellion. He also criticized Kamerhe for his participation in an event organized by James Kabarebe, a Rwandan general cited in numerous crimes committed in eastern DRC.
This decision by Mbindule testifies to the tensions within the Congolese political class, particularly with regard to relations with Rwanda. While some politicians advocate an approach of reconciliation and collaboration with Rwanda, others, like Mbindule, strongly oppose any form of alliance with the neighboring country.
Mbindule’s membership of the UDPS also strengthens the position of the ruling party, led by Tshisekedi. By welcoming a deputy from another party, the UDPS demonstrates its desire to strengthen its base and broaden its political coalition.
This announcement highlights the divisions within the Congolese political class and underlines the importance of regional issues in national politics. The fight against Rwandan aggression and the search for stability in the Great Lakes region continue to influence alliances and political choices in the DRC.
This political development will certainly have repercussions on the Congolese political scene in the months to come. The UDPS strengthens its position by welcoming new members and expanding its influence, while the UNC loses an important deputy
