“Training on human trafficking case management: a key initiative to fight against this scourge in the DRC”

Human Trafficking Case Management Training

The fight against human trafficking is a major concern throughout the world, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is no exception to this scourge. Faced with this problem, the Coordination in charge of youth, the fight against GBV and human trafficking, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and with the financial support of USAID, organized a training workshop on the management of human trafficking cases.

This workshop, which was held in Matadi in the province of Kongo-Central, aimed to strengthen the capacities of social actors involved in the care of victims of human trafficking. During three days, the participants were able to acquire knowledge on the general context, the principles, the techniques and the instruments of management of human trafficking cases. The aim was to empower them to transfer this knowledge to their respective colleagues, networks and sectors.

The holding of this workshop is justified by the alarming figures of human trafficking in the world. According to a recent joint study by ILO and IOM, more than 50 million people are victims of human trafficking worldwide, suffering forced labor, sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, organ trafficking, forced begging, debt bondage, forced recruitment into armed groups, etc.

In the DRC, there is an urgent need to strengthen the institutional capacities and skills of frontline actors to deal with this problem. This is why IOM, in collaboration with the Congolese authorities, has set up this specialized training for social workers responsible for protecting the rights of victims.

Ely Thelot, IOM Technical Advisor, underlined the importance of this initiative and welcomed the participation of social actors in the care of victims of human trafficking. He praised the commitment of Mrs. Chantal Yelo Mulop, in charge of human trafficking, and of the head of division Mr. Roger Ndangi.

Henri Pami Mayala, member of the Youth Coordination, fight against GBV and human trafficking, pointed out that this training will enable social workers to identify cases of human trafficking and take the necessary measures to relieve the victims. He also underlined the importance of raising awareness and preventing human trafficking in the Kongo-Central province, particularly in the city of Matadi.

The management of human trafficking cases is a crucial issue in the fight against this scourge. Training and building the capacity of frontline actors is essential to protect the rights of victims and put an end to this form of human exploitation
