RDC: Moïse Katumbi, Augustin Matata, and Delly Sesanga Issue Joint Statement Condemning the Assassination of Chérubin Okende Senga
In a joint press release, opposition candidates Moïse Katumbi, Augustin Matata, and Delly Sesanga have expressed their outrage over the assassination of the national deputy and former transport minister, Chérubin Okende Senga. They condemn the killings, arbitrary arrests, and targeted assassinations of opposition figures as hindering the safe exercise of pre-electoral and electoral activities.
The three candidates denounce the politicization of the justice system and security services and demand an urgent meeting of all stakeholders to discuss the optimal conditions for the free and peaceful exercise of political activities. They call for a truly independent judicial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the murder of Chérubin Okende Senga and the swift apprehension of those responsible.
The assassination of the Ensemble for the Republic spokesperson occurs against the backdrop of a regime that undermines human rights and denies public liberties. The candidates insist on a thorough and transparent investigation, emphasizing the need for a speedy resolution.
The joint statement also highlights the worsening security situation in the country and the impunity and disregard for legal guarantees in criminal procedures. The candidates express their concern for the safety of Congolese citizens and call for concrete actions to address the deteriorating security situation.
It is important to note that news of Chérubin Okende’s death broke on the morning of July 13th. His body was found in his abandoned jeep on Avenue Poids Lourds in Kinshasa. Ensemble for the Republic had previously denounced the “cowardly abduction” that took place at the parking lot of the Constitutional Court. The police and army were present during the retrieval of the body, which was then taken to the morgue.
This tragic incident further highlights the need for a comprehensive and impartial investigation
