“Binton, a village in the Democratic Republic of Congo plagued by violence and destruction”

The village of Binton, located in the territory of Kwamouth in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is facing a dramatic situation which is leading to the flight of its inhabitants. Indeed, the village was recently attacked by Mobondo militiamen during a clash with the Congolese army.

According to the testimonies collected, the attack took place in the early hours of the morning, when the militiamen tried to storm the army camp. The Mobondo militiamen were estimated at around 400. The clashes were violent and caused the destruction of several houses in the village.

Information on the human losses is still unclear. The village chief, Masiambio, says he does not have precise figures on the number of dead. However, according to the elected National MP for Kwamouth, Guy Musomo, there are at least 7 dead, as well as many seriously injured and missing people.

This attack comes in a context of growing insecurity in the Kwamouth region since June 2023. The militiamen continue to operate in the Bandundu region, which has led to the postponement of the voter registration and identification operation in two times.

Faced with this alarming situation, the population of Binton is forced to flee to find refuge and protect themselves. Residents are scattered, desperately seeking safe shelter.

Importantly, footage of the village after the attack by Mobondo militiamen is available, documenting the violence and destruction that has befallen the community of Binton. These images are a poignant reminder of the tragic reality experienced by many regions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where insecurity and armed clashes persist.

It is essential that the Congolese authorities intensify their efforts to restore peace and security in the Kwamouth region, in order to protect the local populations and put an end to the actions of the militiamen. The lives of people in Binton and other nearby villages are at stake, and urgent action is needed to ensure their safety and well-being.

It is also essential that the international community support efforts to resolve security issues in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, by providing humanitarian assistance and working with the Congolese authorities to resolve conflicts and promote stability in the region.

The situation in Binton is a stark reminder of the challenges facing the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and it is essential that concrete actions are taken to end the violence and allow communities to live in peace and security
