At the heart of the news in Butembo, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is the announcement of the candidacy of Me Sekera Kivwasuvwamo, lawyer and member of the political group “AV”, in the next elections. This follows his application to the Office of Reception and Processing of Applications (BRTC) on July 14, 2023.
In a statement when filing his candidacy, Me Sekera Kivwasuvwamo expressed his wish to ensure that there would be no extension for the filing of candidacies, but also added that he had been informed that he there would be a possibility for late applicants to apply the next day, if there was still a queue. This opening offered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) is encouraging news for latecomers.
The candidate spoke about the problems that the city of Butembo is facing and which motivates him to run. Among these problems, he mentioned the issue of urban roads and electrical energy. He particularly denounced the fact that the company Énergie du Kivu (ENK) charges consumers for the rental of electricity meters, which he considers unacceptable.
In addition to this, Me Sekera Kivwasuvwamo underlined his commitment to fight against insalubrity in the city and to support the war-displaced who reside there. He also highlighted his involvement in issues such as the massacres, the management of the ENK company, the paving of roads and REGIDESO (Congolese water company).
The candidate also deplored the situation of students who must pay internet connection fees of 15 dollars, when they have never had access to this service. If elected, he also intends to tackle this issue.
