The 5th Biannual Coordination Meeting of the African Union: Accelerating the Implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)

The 5th Biannual Coordination Meeting of the African Union, currently taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, marks the start of crucial discussions for the future of Africa. With the theme “Accelerating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)”, this event brings together African leaders from all walks of life to discuss the issues related to this ambitious continental initiative.

The ZLECAf, launched on January 1, 2021, aims to create a single market comprising more than 1.3 billion people in Africa by eliminating trade and tariff barriers between member countries. This bi-annual coordination meeting is of paramount importance as it will assess the progress made so far in the implementation of the AfCFTA and discuss concrete steps to be taken to accelerate its deployment across the continent.

The meeting is being held in two parts, with the 43rd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union preceding the coordination meeting. This session brings together Ministers of Foreign Affairs and other senior AU officials to discuss political, economic and social issues that are at the heart of the African agenda.
