East African Community sets up online platform to improve performance of One Stop Border Posts

Title: East African Community Launches Online Platform to Measure Performance of One Stop Border Posts

Introduction :
The East African Community (EAC) is a regional organization that is actively engaged in improving trade facilitation and the business environment in the region. With this in mind, the EAC has just launched an innovative online platform that aims to measure the performance of the 22 One-Stop Border Posts (USPs) in the region. This initiative, developed in collaboration with USAID and Trade Mark Africa (TMA), will provide real-time data to make informed decisions and improve the efficiency of these strategic positions.

A measurement tool for informed decisions:
Through this new online platform, the CAE will be able to collect and analyze real-time data on the performance of PFUs. This data, grouped according to six key criteria, will make it possible to assess time, cost, volume/flow, infrastructure, inter-agency coordination and user satisfaction.

The purpose of this tool is to identify any shortcomings and weaknesses in the operation of one-stop border posts, in order to put in place improvement measures. Whether in terms of human resources, physical or digital infrastructure, the platform will make it possible to draw up a precise inventory and promote collective action with a view to optimal performance of PFUs.

An investment for the future:
The commissioning of this PFU measurement platform represents a significant investment on the part of the EAC and its partners. Alban Odhiambo, TradeMark Africa’s Senior Director for Business Environment, stresses the importance of this regular monitoring and the resulting improvements. According to him, this will reduce the cost of doing business in the region and maximize the benefits of UFPs.

Support trade and the business environment:
The EAC is implementing several measures aimed at facilitating trade and improving the business environment in the region. In addition to the PFU measurement tool, other initiatives are already underway, such as the implementation of the Single Customs Territory and the Authorized Economic Operator program. These actions bear witness to the EAC’s commitment to creating an environment conducive to economic development and to strengthening trade between the various countries of the region.

Conclusion :
The commissioning of the EAC One Stop Border Post Measurement Platform marks a significant step forward in improving trade facilitation and the business environment in the region. With this innovative tool, the CAE will be able to make informed decisions to optimize the performance of PFUs. It is one more step towards creating a dynamic and prosperous region where cross-border trade is facilitated and encouraged
