The authorities and civil society reacted with indignation to the tragic assassination of Chérubin Okende, a member of the party Together for the Republic of Moïse Katumbi. The government condemned this heinous act and ordered a full investigation to shed light on the matter.

The government spokesperson said: “The government has learned with horror of the assassination of the Honorable Cherubin Okende Senga, former Minister of Transport. While condemning this heinous act, it has instructed all security services to carry out a thorough investigation in order to bring the culprits to justice. The government offers its deepest condolences to his family.”

Ambassadors and diplomatic representatives also spoke out, expressing their dismay and condolences to Okende’s family. The European Union Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo said: “I learn with dismay of the assassination of Chérubin Okende. Finding and bringing to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime must be the absolute priority.”

Presidential candidates Augustin Matata Ponyo and Seth Kikuni have both denounced the act of violence and called for justice. Matata Ponyo declared: “We have returned to a regime of terror and unspeakable dictatorship”, while Seth Kikuni warned that the elimination of Okende would not remain without consequences.

In civil society, Lucha called Okende’s assassination a “state crime” and called for justice. The African Association for Human Rights has also called on the government to use all the means at its disposal to identify those responsible for this heinous act.

This assassination arouses great emotion and raises concerns about security and freedom of expression in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is imperative that the authorities act quickly to resolve this case and to guarantee the safety of all citizens. No one should fear for their life by expressing their political views.

A man’s life has been taken and it is our duty to ensure that justice is served. The Democratic Republic of the Congo must fight against impunity and guarantee a safe environment for all its citizens.

It is time for the violence and intimidation to stop and for democracy, freedom and the protection of human rights to prevail. Those responsible for this heinous act must be brought to justice and the truth must come out
