Barbara Kanam: a fighter and independent woman at the head of the Cultural Promotion Fund in the DRC
The world of Congolese music is in turmoil with the appointment of Barbara Kanam as General Manager of the Cultural Promotion Fund (FPC) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This musician and singer, known for her exceptional voice and her patriotic commitment, will certainly bring a new dynamic to the cultural development of the country.
Born in Bukavu, DRC, Barbara Kanam grew up in a large family. She has traveled the national and international stages, notably in South Africa, Ivory Coast and France, to share her music and her talent with the whole world.
His school and university career demonstrates his determination and his thirst for knowledge. After continuing her studies at the Belgian school in Kinshasa, she obtained her state diploma in Lubumbashi, before turning to studies in economics in South Africa and international trade in Côte d’Ivoire. This solid training allowed him to develop a holistic vision of the music industry, combining art and business.
It was in 1999, within the Dévotion orchestra, that Barbara Kanam discovered her passion for singing. She then continued her vocal training in Johannesburg, also perfecting her guitar technique. With this experience, she created an acoustic repertoire and toured the DRC and South Africa, entitled “One Woman Acoustic Show”.
His first album, “Mokili”, with acoustic sounds, was released in 1999 and marked the start of a promising career. She then recorded several albums, including “Teti” in 2003 and “Karibu” in 2009. Her music, mixing Congolese, African and international influences, earned her international recognition and collaborations with renowned artists such as Papa Wemba, Fally Ipupa and Jacob Desvarieux.
But Barbara Kanam is not only a talented artist, she is also a committed patriot. During the period of war imposed by Rwanda on the DRC, she supported the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) and was appointed National Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), for the promotion of climate actions in the DRC.
Her appointment as General Manager of the Cultural Promotion Fund is recognition of her exceptional career and her commitment to Congolese culture. Alongside the Deputy General Manager, Didier Masela, founder of the Wenge Musica orchestra, her mission will be to support and promote the country’s artistic and cultural talents.
