Voter registration: Civil society in Gungu territory innovates with the “electoral showcase”
A few months before the elections scheduled for next December, civil society in the territory of Gungu in the south-west of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has decided to set up a new initiative called the “electoral showcase”. This initiative aims to identify and promote the most qualified candidates capable of representing and defending the interests of the territory.
The “election showcase” has been compared to a cupboard with transparent glass, making it easy to see clean or dirty glasses and plates. In the electoral context, the panes symbolize the criteria applied to evaluate the candidates. These criteria include competence, initiatives taken, level of studies and a social project in line with the development of the territory of Gungu.
This innovative initiative is the result of a citizen consultation conducted by civil society since last May. The population is also made aware of the importance of this approach in the development of the territory.
Joachim Kusamba, president of the civil society of Gungu, declares: “This innovation was born from the concern to see our territory develop. These criteria aim, ultimately, the development of this vast territory which has remained underdeveloped for years” .
The “electoral showcase” is thus positioned as a valuable tool in the electoral process by making it possible to select the best candidates to represent the territory of Gungu. This approach aims to guarantee responsible governance and promote the socio-economic development of the region.
By establishing transparency and highlighting objective criteria, the “electoral showcase” contributes to strengthening voters’ confidence in the choice of candidates and to promoting participatory and inclusive democracy.
This Gungu civil society initiative shows the importance of citizen involvement and innovation in the electoral process. It encourages other territories and regions of the DRC to adopt similar practices with the aim of improving the representativeness and effectiveness of local leaders
