Congolese theater is in the spotlight with the participation of N’Anza Tata in the 2023 RFI Theater Prize. Among the twelve candidates selected for this prestigious competition, the Congolese author presents his play “Analogie du vertige”. This selection is a recognition of the literary and dramaturgical quality and the originality of his work.
Since the creation of the RFI Theater Prize in 2014, the Democratic Republic of Congo has not yet won the final victory. Despite this, Congolese authors continue to submit their applications with the hope of seeing their talent recognized. Last year, three Congolese authors tried their luck, but without success. This year, N’Anza Tata is the only Congolese representative in the running, thus carrying the country’s hopes.
“Analogie du vertigo” is a play that offers a subtle portrait of contemporary Congolese society. The action takes place in a bar in Kinshasa, the evening of the burial of the tooth of Lumumba, a strong symbol of Congolese history. Customers from various backgrounds exchange their points of view, under the guidance of the bar owner. Kabukula, the neighborhood troubadour, improvises a poem, allowing tongues to loosen and bring out hidden truths.
The RFI Theater Prize is awarded each year by Radio France Internationale (RFI) to a French-speaking author from Africa, the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean or the Near and Middle East. Its objective is to highlight the dramatic works of French-speaking authors. A jury made up of artists and professionals selects the best text from among the ten pre-selected. The name of the winner will be announced on September 24, during the Zébrures d’Automne festival in Limoges.
N’Anza Tata’s career in this competition highlights the diversity and richness of Congolese theatre. His talent and creativity are a credit to the Congolese art scene.
