Article: Congolese armed forces face threat from Mobondo attackers
In western Democratic Republic of Congo, the Congolese armed forces are currently facing a growing threat from Mobondo attackers. This militia is trying to invade a large part of the provinces of Maï-Ndombe and Kwango, even threatening to reach the capital Kinshasa.
The Mobondo armed group was born out of a conflict between the Teke and Yaka ethnic groups, mainly related to land disputes. This conflict has already caused the death of at least 300 people in less than a year, according to Human Rights Watch.
Aware of this threat, the Congolese government recently announced during a council of ministers that the armed forces have intensified their efforts to fight the Mobondo attackers. They are adopting a multidimensional approach with the aim of definitively restoring peace and restoring the authority of the State.
According to the Deputy Defense Minister, the latest news on the ground is encouraging. The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) recently captured several rebels during an ambush by the army. This operation resulted in the capture of 19 combatants, as well as the recovery of 12 12-gauge rifles and 8 machetes.
In the province of Maï-Ndombe, elements of the Mobile Intervention Group also managed to get their hands on Kafuti Badimilwana, alias American, the leader of the Mobondo assailants in the locality of Kimpana, Wamba sector. Other rebels were also captured, and effects belonging to the attackers were recovered in various localities of Kwamouth and on the banks of the Congo River.
The Congolese government reaffirms its determination to mobilize all the necessary resources to put an end to this violence and eradicate these pockets of insecurity across the country. The Congolese people, who live in fear in the face of this growing threat, are waiting for drastic measures to ensure their safety.
It is essential that the Congolese armed forces remain vigilant and continue to intensify their efforts to eliminate the threat posed by the Mobondo attackers. The restoration of peace and security in the region is essential to enable the development and well-being of the Congolese population. The authorities must also work to resolve the land disputes that are at the root of this conflict, in order to prevent new tensions and violence in the future.
As a growing and dynamic international cityscape, Kinshasa plays a key role in the social and economic development of the DRC.
