“The prolonged detention of Franck Diongo in the DRC: A worrying example of human rights abuses”

2023-07-09

After two weeks of detention by military intelligence, opponent Franck Diongo was finally transferred to Ndolo military prison this Saturday, July 8, 2023.

His transfer comes after a long period of detention in the premises of military intelligence. Accused of undermining state security, Franck Diongo thus joins Salomon Kalonda, strategic adviser to Moïse Katumbi, also detained for the same reason.

The opponent’s situation is deteriorating day by day, according to his lawyers, who warn of the worrying state of health of their client following his prolonged detention. This situation raises concerns about respect for human rights and the use of state security as a pretext to muzzle the opposition.

Faced with these accusations, the power in place justifies the cascading arrests by claiming to want to impose the authority of the State. However, the opposition denounces an instrumentalization of state security to establish a dictatorship.

This situation highlights the political tensions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and raises questions about respect for democratic principles and fundamental freedoms. The prolonged detention of Franck Diongo and other political opponents raises the question of fair justice and reinforces calls for inclusive and peaceful dialogue to resolve political tensions and ensure respect for the rights of all Congolese citizens.

It is essential that the international community closely monitors this situation and exerts pressure on the Congolese authorities in order to guarantee respect for human rights and respect for democratic principles. Political stability and peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are crucial issues for the region and require special attention from the international community.
