“Tense relations between the DRC and Rwanda: President Tshisekedi denounces Rwanda’s support for M23 terrorists and calls for cooperation for stability in the region”

The tense relations between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda were once again highlighted during a joint press conference between Presidents Félix Tshisekedi and Cyril Ramaphosa. President Tshisekedi has denounced Rwanda’s support for M23 terrorists, responsible for numerous crimes in North Kivu province.

The Congolese president said that Rwanda still denies its involvement in the instability of eastern DRC, because its economy depends on it. According to him, Rwanda presents the problem as internal to the DRC, with Congolese rebels revolting to defend their community. However, there is ample evidence to the contrary, and Rwanda continues to deny responsibility.

Félix Tshisekedi also highlighted the fact that Rwanda is trying to push the DRC to negotiate with an M23 faction while keeping dissent in reserve to continue destabilizing the region. According to him, this makes negotiations difficult, because Rwanda denies its role and sends individuals who are only puppets to discuss with a legitimate government.

Despite Rwanda’s denials, UN experts continue to present evidence of its active support for M23. The experts’ reports detail the involvement of the Rwandan army in strengthening the ranks of the M23 and in coordinating operations on Congolese soil.

President Paul Kagame, meanwhile, questions the UN reports, calling them incomplete and questioning their real motivation. According to him, these reports only maintain the status quo and allow the money to continue flowing without solving the real problems.

Despite ongoing tensions, it is essential that the two countries find a way to resolve differences and work together to ensure stability in the region. Cooperation and transparency are necessary to end instability and enable the economic and social development of the DRC and the region as a whole.
