“Memorandum of Congolese opponents: for harmonious and transparent elections in the DRC”

Memorandum of Congolese opponents for a harmonious electoral dialogue

In a recently published memorandum, several Congolese opposition leaders, including Moïse Katumbi, Delly Sesanga and Augustin Matata, call for a dialogue between the various stakeholders in order to harmonize the technical aspects of the ongoing electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo. (DRC). They underline the importance of establishing a real consultation framework to ensure regular and transparent monitoring of the electoral process.

According to these opponents, it is essential to shed light on certain information concerning the distribution of seats between the authorities of the Sacred Union, the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) and other personalities of power. They also call for a revision of the electoral law, particularly with regard to the voting method and the publication of partial results by polling station, in order to dispel any misunderstanding and guarantee a credible election for all candidates.

Furthermore, these opposition leaders wish to obtain precise information on the total number of machines delivered by Miru Systems and their deployment in the registration centers, accompanied by a detailed map of all the operational zones. They also denounce the instrumentalization of political, judicial and fiscal institutions against opposition candidates, as well as the arbitrary arrests of their collaborators.

The memorandum also refers to restrictions on freedom of movement imposed on opposition candidates and intimidation of journalists belonging to a specific political camp. Opponents call on the regime in place to put an end to these practices and to respect the fundamental principles of freedom of expression and democracy.

It should be noted that this memorandum was signed by several opposition leaders, with the exception of Martin Fayulu, although he was a signatory of the Lubumbashi declaration. This omission could raise questions about the unity and cohesion of the Congolese opposition.

In short, this memorandum from Congolese opponents highlights the importance of constructive dialogue and total transparency in the ongoing electoral process in the DRC. The demands made aim to ensure credible, fair and democratic elections that truly reflect the will of the Congolese people. We hope that this memorandum will serve as a basis for fruitful discussions between stakeholders and contribute to strengthening democracy in the DRC.
