Francophonie Games: Surprise withdrawals and moments of solidarity in Kinshasa

The Games of La Francophonie, scheduled for July 28 to August 6 in Kinshasa, are experiencing last-minute upheavals. Indeed, the director of the national committee, Isidore Kwandja, expressed his surprise at the withdrawal of some countries which were initially to participate in the event.

Among the countries that have canceled their participation are Canada, represented by Quebec, but New Brunswick has confirmed its presence. Switzerland also ensured its participation, as did Wallonia and France despite their concerns expressed upon their arrival.

Isidore Kwandja made a point of stressing that all the concerns raised by these countries, whether in terms of security, health or infrastructure, have been taken into account by the Congolese government. Indeed, security guarantees were given to Canadian delegations and responses to concerns were provided to Wallonia and France.

Despite these withdrawals, many other French-speaking countries and territories have confirmed their participation in the Games of La Francophonie. Among them, New Brunswick and Switzerland have maintained their commitment, showing their confidence in the organization of the event by the Democratic Republic of Congo.

These Francophone Games, which will take place for the ninth time, represent an important moment for sharing and celebrating Francophone cultures through sport, culture and youth. Despite the obstacles encountered, the organizing committee remains determined to make this event a success.

It is to be hoped that these withdrawals will not prejudice the holding of the Games and that those who take part in them will be able to take full advantage of this unique experience. The French-speaking community is looking forward to seeing talents emerge and ties strengthen during these Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa
