News: Félix Tshisekedi accuses Rwanda of instability in eastern DRC
In a joint press conference with the South African President, Félix Tshisekedi once again questioned Rwanda regarding the security situation in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Congolese president claims that Kigali is at the origin of the instability which prevails in the region of greater Kivu. He accuses the Rwandan president, who continues to deny any responsibility of his country in this situation, of lying.
Félix Tshisekedi declares: “Rwanda, I remind you, has always lied about the reality of its aggression against the DRC. He never acknowledged the truth of his attack on the DRC. He has always presented the situation as an internal problem in Congo and his M23 auxiliaries as Congolese who have taken up arms against their country. Everyone knows that’s a lie. And he continues to deny that he is attacking the Congo, despite all the evidence today”.
The Congolese president is considering the possibility of negotiating with Rwanda on this issue, but believes that the current situation does not allow for discussions between the two countries.
“So you understand that in such a situation, it is difficult to discuss with this country which allows itself to mandate a small group of people at the discussion table with a legitimate and globally recognized government,” he laments.
Félix Tshisekedi also addresses the issue of the East African regional force. He criticizes his behavior vis-à-vis the peace agreements and treaties which set specific dates and terms. He points out that some contingents of the East African force have developed collusion with elements of the M23, even allowing them to levy taxes. New arrangements have been agreed with the leaders of the countries concerned to make a decision by September.
This statement by Félix Tshisekedi highlights the persistent tensions between the DRC and Rwanda regarding the situation in the east of the country. This also highlights the complexity of resolving security and stability issues in the region.
