Securing the 2023 elections: a major challenge for the Congolese government
The electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces many challenges, one of the most pressing being the issue of security. This concern was highlighted during the Forum of Stakeholders in the Electoral Process, which was held recently in Kinshasa.
The participants of this forum unanimously called on the Congolese government to put in place effective security measures to guarantee the smooth running of the elections scheduled for 2023. They highlighted the threat posed by the security crisis, in particular in the east of the country where armed groups and negative forces, such as the Rwandan-backed M23, continue to cause trouble.
In addition to the security challenges in the east of the country, participants also raised other issues such as the Mobondo phenomenon in the west and kidnappings in Kinshasa, which can potentially disrupt the ongoing electoral process. These concerns underscore the critical importance of security to ensure democratic and transparent elections.
The Stakeholder Forum also highlighted another challenge facing the electoral process: disinformation and hate speech. The participants were made aware of the risks that this represents, particularly in terms of conflagration of the country. Countering disinformation and promoting a healthy and inclusive environment for elections were identified as key priorities.
It is necessary to underline that the participants also welcomed the international initiatives aimed at supporting the democratic elections in the DRC. The European Union, for example, has expressed its support and commitment to consolidating democracy and stability in the country.
Ultimately, securing the 2023 elections in the DRC is a major challenge for the government and all stakeholders involved. Adequate security measures must be put in place to guarantee a transparent and peaceful electoral process. Moreover, countering disinformation and promoting a healthy political climate are also essential elements to ensure democratic and legitimate elections. The DRC is at a crucial juncture in its political history, and how the current challenges are addressed will have a significant impact on the future of the country
