“Election security in the DRC: a crucial challenge for the Congolese government”

Ensuring election security: a major challenge for the Congolese government

The Forum of Stakeholders in the Electoral Process met recently in Kinshasa to discuss the challenges facing the elections scheduled for 2023 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Among the main concerns raised during these meetings, the security issue was highlighted by the participants.

Indeed, the security crisis raging in certain parts of the country, particularly in the east, constitutes a serious threat to the smooth running of the next elections. Armed groups and negative forces present in the region, such as the Rwandan-backed M23, represent a real challenge for the stability of the electoral process.

In addition, other security problems are also reported, such as the Mobondo phenomenon in the west of the country and kidnappings in Kinshasa. These instabilities could compromise the organization and holding of elections in good conditions.

Faced with these security challenges, the Congolese government is strongly encouraged by the various stakeholders to allocate substantial resources to ensure the security of the elections. It is essential to take adequate measures to guarantee the protection of voters, candidates and institutions involved in the electoral process.

It should also be noted that the Stakeholder Forum addressed another crucial issue related to the electoral context: disinformation and hate speech. These can generate social and political tensions, thus jeopardizing the stability of the electoral process. Therefore, it is essential to raise public awareness of the importance of verified information and to combat the spread of false information.

The Forum of Stakeholders in the Electoral Process concluded with the intervention of the President of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Denis Kadima, who drew up an inventory of the current electoral process. The discussions and recommendations made during these meetings will now have to be taken into account by the Congolese government to guarantee secure and transparent elections in 2023.

In conclusion, election security is a major challenge for the Democratic Republic of Congo. Faced with a persistent security crisis, it is crucial that the government put in place the necessary means to ensure the protection of voters and the stability of the electoral process
