
In his speech to the United Nations General Assembly, President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo called for a gradual withdrawal of MONUSCO, the UN mission in the DRC. He stressed that peacekeeping missions have failed to resolve the problems of rebellions and armed conflicts in the country. The President also expressed his concern about the persistent insecurity in the east of the country and called for concrete actions to protect civilian populations and sanction rebel groups. Finally, President Tshisekedi confirmed the upcoming holding of general elections, with measures taken to ensure the transparency and credibility of the electoral process. This article highlights the challenges facing the DRC and the country’s aspirations to achieve peace, security and good governance.
