On September 23, 2023, the town of Beledweyne in Somalia was hit by a suicide attack which caused the deaths of several people and destroyed buildings. Although the attack has not yet been claimed, it once again raises the question of security in the country and the continuing threat from terrorist groups. The horrific images broadcast showed the extent of the damage and emergency services were quickly deployed to search for survivors. The results of this attack are tragic, with at least 13 victims and more than 40 injured, mainly innocent civilians. This attack comes against a backdrop of the fight against Islamist Shebab militants, led by the Somali government and supported by African Union forces and American airstrikes. The Somali government has recently suffered significant setbacks in its fight against Shebab, leading to a call for a delay in the withdrawal of African Union troops. This attack recalls the complexity of the security situation in Somalia and underlines the urgency of action to combat terrorism. The victims must be honored and those responsible brought to justice, while the international community must continue to support the Somali government in its efforts to ensure security and stability in the country.
