In a context where Congolese justice is criticized, judges in Kinshasa have been called upon to restore the image of the institution. During a working session, the first president of the Court of Cassation urged the judges to assume their responsibilities and to moralize the life of the magistrate. He insisted that the judge must be above suspicion and avoid relationships that could lead to him being accused of corruption. Remuneration issues were also addressed, with the recommendation to quit if unsatisfied. In addition, problems such as non-compliance with the start times of hearings, non-compliance with deadlines for the pronouncement of judgments and judgments were highlighted. Recommendations were made to remedy these problems, in particular the possibility for women magistrates to go and work in the interior of the country in order to promote balance. In conclusion, it is essential to restore the image of justice in the Democratic Republic of Congo by moralizing the life of the magistrate and respecting the rules of operation. Following up on these appeals and taking concrete action will be key to improving the country’s justice system.
