A hearing in the Democratic Republic of Congo has begun to try nearly 20 defendants, including officers of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC), accused of arms trafficking and collaboration with armed groups. Among the defendants are army officers, police and civilians, including a woman. Arms trafficking has become a growing concern in Ituri, with at least 7 army officers accused of selling weapons to rebel groups. Police officers are also involved in this case. Defendants found guilty risk disbarment from the army and convictions. The fight against arms trafficking remains a major challenge in the DRC and the authorities must continue to act to preserve the country’s security.
