The ECOWAS ultimatum in Niger ends in three days. ECOWAS has called for the release of the Nigerien president and the restoration of constitutional order. A mediation delegation went to Niamey to find a peaceful solution. Negotiations continue behind the scenes and hope for a peaceful resolution remains. However, if the military refuses to hand over power, ECOWAS is ready to use force. All member countries of ECOWAS are ready to participate in the military intervention if necessary. A meeting of Chiefs of Staff is underway in Abuja to put in place a response plan. There are fears of a possible regional conflict, but ECOWAS insists the aim is to free a democratically elected authority. The situation remains tense but the political future of Niger will depend on the ability of the actors to find a peaceful solution and to preserve regional stability.
