The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for the Monitoring of Reforms and Public Action (CORAP) of the DRC recently presented a guide on the consequences of the exploitation of hydrocarbons on local communities. This guide aims to inform and raise public awareness of the issues related to this activity. It addresses basic concepts, the issues of renewable energy, pollution and exploration, as well as the impacts on the environment, the economy and the social fabric of communities. Concrete examples are presented, highlighting the experiences of countries such as the DRC, Nigeria and the United States. This guide, available for download, helps facilitate dialogue and promote more sustainable practices in this key sector of the Congolese economy. CORAP deserves to be commended for its commitment to a more responsible exploitation of hydrocarbon resources in the DRC.
