In this article, we discuss recent sanctions imposed by the U.S. State Department on Congolese officials involved in corruption and wildlife trafficking in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These sanctions were welcomed positively by the NGO Congolese Alert for the Environment and Human Rights (ACEDH), which sees them as a significant step forward in the fight against corruption and illicit trafficking. However, it is emphasized that further investigations are needed and that justice must be served to punish all those responsible. ACEDH also calls for stronger international cooperation to fight against this kind of transnational crime. In conclusion, these sanctions represent a beacon of hope for environmental justice in the DRC, but additional efforts are needed to guarantee the protection of biodiversity and preserve the country’s climate future.
