Gov Oluwarotimi Akeredolu recently announced the disbursement of ₦1.0 billion as gratuity arrears to retired local government staff and primary school teachers in Ondo State. Despite the government’s pressing financial commitments and limited resources, this payment was deemed necessary to honor the hard work and dedication of these individuals.
Akeredolu, known for his worker-friendly policies, expressed his commitment to ensuring that retirees receive their benefits without any hardships. He highlighted the fact that his administration had inherited a backlog of seven months of unpaid salaries when they took office in 2017, and within a month, all arrears were fully paid. This further demonstrates the government’s dedication to prioritizing the welfare of its workers.
The governor emphasized that all retirees, whether they are still alive or deceased, will receive their gratuity payments. Furthermore, he assured retirees in local government and primary schools that another tranche of payment will be approved in the first quarter of 2024. This regularity in gratuity payments aims to eliminate any outstanding arrears and provide financial security to retirees.
Alhaji Amidu Takuro, the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, expressed his joy at witnessing retirees receiving their well-deserved benefits. He credited the governor’s vision of ensuring the happiness of the people of Ondo State, stating that all 2011 retirees and part of 2012 retirees have already been paid. Additionally, those in need or facing health issues are being prioritized and receiving their payments promptly.
Comrade Bola Taiwo, the President of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), lauded the Akeredolu-led government for its commitment to paying workers’ salaries and benefits regularly. He noted that in the past, pensioners were often left unpaid or received delayed payments. However, under Akeredolu’s administration, all arrears of pensions have been settled, and the payment of gratuities will be a gradual process.
In conclusion, the disbursement of ₦1.0 billion as gratuity arrears demonstrates Gov Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s commitment to the welfare of retirees in Ondo State. This action not only provides financial security to retired local government staff and primary school teachers, but it also showcases the government’s dedication to fulfilling its obligations to its workers. With regular payment of gratuities, the administration aims to eliminate all arrears and ensure the well-being of retirees.
