Assassination of Chérubin Okende: the call for responsibility in a tense political climate
The tragic murder of national deputy Chérubin Okende continues to arouse strong reactions. While his body was found lifeless, riddled with bullets, his fellow deputy Claudel Lubaya calls for political responsibility in a context marked by incendiary speeches and a rise in insecurity.
In a tense political climate, where the kidnapping and assassination of opposition politicians are increasing, Claudel Lubaya warns against speeches that undermine social cohesion and call for violence. He calls to overcome the emotion aroused by this assassination to come together as a nation and block these destructive speeches.
Claudel Lubaya stresses that in the face of growing insecurity affecting all walks of life, it is imperative that political leaders demonstrate dignity and moderation. It also calls on the President of the Republic to assume his responsibilities to guarantee national cohesion and put an end to tensions and divisions.
In this period of crisis, Claudel Lubaya insists on the importance of national unity and everyone’s responsibility. He recalls that the gravity of the situation requires that all political actors act with restraint and refrain from inflammatory speeches which only fan the flames of chaos.
Claudel Lubaya’s appeal comes as numerous violent acts targeting opposition politicians have been reported. The travel ban on the President of Ensemble for the Republic in certain provinces, kidnappings and searches of residences are all factors that fuel concerns about the safety of opponents.
In reaction to the assassination of Chérubin Okende, Together for the Republic, the political party to which he belonged, expressed its dismay and qualified his death as a State crime. The Congolese government has announced the launch of a multidisciplinary investigation to elucidate the circumstances of this murder, calling on foreign services.
This tragic event is once again a reminder of the urgency of finding solutions to establish security and stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Political actors must demonstrate responsibility and put an end to speeches and actions that threaten national cohesion. The Congolese people deserve better than the current violence and insecurity.
It’s time to reach out and work together to rebuild a strong and united Congo
