The participation of President Félix Tshisekedi in the 28th edition of the international climate conference in Dubai is a major event which demonstrates the commitment of the Democratic Republic of Congo to the fight against climate change. As part of this conference, the President will temporarily suspend his electoral campaign to focus on environmental issues.
The Special Envoy of the Head of State for the new climate economy, Tina Salama, underlined the importance of the commitments that the DRC will make during this world summit. Félix Tshisekedi’s vision is to make the fight against climate change a business opportunity. Thus, as part of COP 28, several northern companies will sign a commitment to purchase carbon credits in the DRC, which will help protect peatlands and promote their development. This initiative will have a positive impact on the national economy and contribute to sustainable development.
In parallel with this conference, the DRC will sign a contract on the country envelope within the forum of leaders on forests and climate, called FCLP. This country envelope will make it possible to promote communities living around peatlands by offering them economic alternatives. Thus, these populations will no longer be encouraged to exploit peatlands for agriculture or tree cutting.
President Tshisekedi also announced the creation of a fund for the new climate economy which will be funded by a percentage of the country’s carbon credit transactions. This fund will be used for the construction of sustainable infrastructure and climate-related monuments, with the aim of developing the country sustainably.
This participation of President Félix Tshisekedi at the international climate conference in Dubai demonstrates the DRC’s commitment to protecting the environment and fighting climate change. This innovative approach, which turns the fight against climate change into an economic opportunity, opens up new prospects for sustainable development for the country.
