Last Wednesday, an ambush by Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) fighters claimed the lives of a soldier and a civil society leader in the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The victims, who were returning from a mining quarry, were violently attacked and beheaded. This tragic event underlines the persistence of violence and chaos in this region which has already suffered from numerous conflicts.

According to local reports, the attack occurred near the village of Mapobu, 7 kilometers east of Mayimoya, in Beni territory. The soldier, a member of the 321st battalion based in Mayimoya, was in charge of intelligence while the head of civil society held the post of vice-president in the same locality. Both were surprised by the assailants as they returned from the Mapobu mining quarry.
Unfortunately, the soldiers escorting them fled, leaving the victims at the mercy of the rebels. The latter took the opportunity to kidnap the two men before brutally murdering them by beheading them. The mutilated bodies were found the day after the attack and are currently being kept in the morgue of Oicha General Hospital pending burial.
This new act of violence underlines the fragility of the security situation in the North Kivu region and highlights the constant threat posed by the combatants of the Allied Democratic Forces.
