News: Update of the list of cultural properties of the DRC by UNESCO

During the 42nd general session of UNESCO held in Paris, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) updated its list of cultural properties. This list, presented to the Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Catherine Kathungu Furaha, aims to highlight and preserve the country’s cultural heritage.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, this update includes objects of great historical importance, such as the Lovo massif, the Ishango bone, the Nyanya court, the Wagenia site , and even more. These cultural assets represent essential testimonies of the evolution of the DRC’s past.

This approach to updating the list of cultural assets of the DRC is part of a desire to pool efforts for the preservation and promotion of Congolese knowledge and culture. With this in mind, Minister Catherine Kathungu and her colleague from Primary, Secondary and Technical Education (EPST), Tony Mwana, have decided to cooperate closely to promote science, education, the arts and the cultural heritage of the DRC .

In order to continue this fruitful collaboration, a workshop will be organized in January 2024 to discuss and develop concrete initiatives around these cultural assets. This UNESCO session, in which the Ministry of Culture participates, offers a platform for exchange and cooperation with other countries, thus making it possible to expand the cultural program of the DRC.

This update of the list of cultural properties of the DRC by UNESCO is an important step in the preservation and enhancement of the country’s cultural heritage. By pooling efforts and collaborating with other actors, the Congolese government shows its commitment to the preservation of its history and culture. This approach also contributes to strengthening the cultural identity and international influence of the DRC.
