“Last speech by Félix Tshisekedi: assessment and vision for the future of the DRC”

[Last speech by Félix Tshisekedi to the nation during the Parliamentary Congress]

Félix Tshisekedi’s mandate is coming to an end and he is preparing to deliver his last speech to the nation in front of the deputies and senators gathered in Congress. The Kinshasa newspapers tried to decipher the themes on which the Congolese president will focus during this speech.

According to the daily Le Potentiel, as a candidate for his own succession, Félix Tshisekedi must convince the Congolese people of the actions undertaken during his five-year term in order to be able to consider a second term. The newspaper believes that the head of state will highlight Congolese resilience and its desire to build a better future for the country, focusing on security, prosperity and opportunities for progress for all.

L’Avenir highlights for its part that the president will address the efforts made to strengthen the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), with the aim of bringing peace to troubled regions and allowing all citizens to exercise their right to vote. The withdrawal of forces from East African countries and MONUSCO will also be discussed.

This speech comes a few days before the start of the electoral campaign, as highlighted by La Tempête des Tropiques. Both Houses of Parliament will officially close their doors and the government has held its last meeting of the Council of Ministers. La Prospérité specifies, however, that candidate ministers will be able to keep their positions during the campaign, provided they do not use state resources.

Through his speech, Félix Tshisekedi will therefore have the opportunity to take stock of his five-year term and present his vision for the future of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This latest speech is therefore of particular importance for the outgoing president, who wishes to convince the Congolese people to grant him a second mandate.
