“Kitshanga: the rebel attack that plunged the village into horror”

Rebel attack in Kitshanga: a tragedy marked by violence and destruction

The village of Kitshanga, located in the territory of Beni, in North Kivu, was the scene of a deadly rebel attack on Sunday, November 12. According to available information, this attack was allegedly carried out by ADF (Allied Democratic Forces) rebels and caused numerous victims.

According to testimonies collected on site, the rebels carried out a brutal attack, engaging in acts of violence and massacre against the inhabitants of Kitshanga. They used bladed weapons to kill the occupants of the targeted houses, operating in a methodical and ruthless manner.

The results of this attack are still provisional, but local sources reported the discovery of twenty-six bodies in the early hours of Monday. Some people, including a soldier from the Congolese armed forces, were also reportedly kidnapped by the rebels.

Military authorities claimed that eleven civilians were killed in the attack and seven houses were burned. However, they declared having succeeded in freeing certain hostages, including an infant, thanks to rapid intervention.

This attack by ADF rebels caused a massive displacement of the population. Many Kitshanga residents fled to neighboring towns, such as Nobili, while others crossed the border to seek refuge in Uganda.

This tragedy once again highlights the persistent climate of insecurity in the North Kivu region, where armed groups operate with impunity. Residents of these areas live in constant fear of rebel attacks and the resulting violence.

It is imperative that Congolese authorities strengthen security measures in the region and intensify their efforts to combat armed groups. The protection of the civilian population must be an absolute priority, in order to put an end to this spiral of violence and destruction.

It is also essential that the international community supports the Democratic Republic of Congo in its efforts to restore security and stability in the North Kivu region. Concerted measures must be taken to combat armed groups and to guarantee justice and reparation for the victims of these attacks.

The situation in Kitshanga is a stark reminder of the security challenges facing the DRC. It is time for decisive action to end this violence and to allow the residents of Kitshanga and neighboring areas to live in peace and security.
