Le Desk Femme d’Actualité: Inspiring testimonials from former students with disabilities about their educational journey
In our society, education is a fundamental right for all individuals, regardless of their abilities and differences. However, for people living with disabilities, access to education can be a major challenge. In this article, we would like to highlight some inspiring testimonies from former students of the Faculty Institute of Information and Communication Sciences (IFASIC) in the Democratic Republic of Congo, who overcame obstacles to continue their studies and integrate professionally.
Elie Awalo, a journalist with a degree in organizational and corporate communications, shares his life experience marked by poliomyelitis which affected him since childhood. Despite the prejudices and doubts of those around him, he persevered in his passion for communication and journalism. After having to temporarily abandon his studies, he showed courage and determination to resume his training and obtain his diploma. His message to parents with children with disabilities is clear: guide them according to their intellectual abilities and not their disability, because disability does not define their potential.
Mélanie Musau Kabamba, a woman living with a disability and candidate in the 2023 elections, is grateful for her family’s support and encouragement to continue her studies. Despite obstacles and discouragements, she was able to achieve her dreams thanks to the trust and support of her parents. It highlights the importance of considering people living with disabilities as full human beings, capable of contributing fully to society. His journey demonstrates that education is an essential lever to promote their inclusion and active participation in society.
Rachelle Mbuyi Kabongo, first vice-president of the national network of associations of women living with disabilities in Congo (RENAFAC) and state civil servant, provides positive testimony about her educational career. Despite having polio since the age of 2, she was able to benefit from her father’s encouragement to continue her studies and realize her dream of becoming a journalist. She emphasizes the importance for parents to support their children living with a disability and to offer them the same opportunities for autonomy and development as other children.
These testimonies highlight the determination, resilience and potential of people living with disabilities in the field of education. They also remind us of the importance of inclusion and accessibility for all individuals, regardless of their disability. Society has a crucial role to play in creating an inclusive educational and professional environment, where everyone has the opportunity to realize their dreams and contribute fully to society.
In conclusion, the story of these former IFASIC students demonstrates that disability should not be an obstacle to education and self-realization. With the right support and the willingness to overcome obstacles, people living with disabilities can succeed and thrive in their educational and professional careers. It is time for society to fully recognize and value their potential and contribution, in order to build a more inclusive world for all.
