“Children used as political pawns: a violation of fundamental rights that can no longer be ignored”

Children abused in political campaigns: a violation of fundamental rights

In the electoral context, it is unfortunately common to see the abusive use of children by politicians to promote their campaigns. This practice, which goes against legal provisions, raises concerns about respect for the fundamental rights of children. The provincial coordinator of the Network of Supervisors on Initiation to Child Participation (REIPE)/Kwilu, Martin Gizebu, expressed his concern during a recent interview with Radio Okapi.

According to Martin Gizebu, politicians are using these children for political purposes, thereby violating Article 36 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. He reminds us that children’s place is in school and not in the street to welcome election candidates. Unfortunately, these practices sometimes lead to tragic consequences, such as the death of a child during previous elections in 2011. Children are neither voters nor eligible, so it is necessary to protect their integrity and ensure that they are not misused for political purposes.

This alarming observation highlights the need for parents to protect their children and raise civil society awareness of this issue. It is essential to educate the population on children’s rights and promote their respect in all spheres of society, including during electoral periods. Politicians must also take responsibility and refrain from using children in their electoral campaigns.

In conclusion, the misuse of children for political purposes is a violation of their fundamental rights. It is essential to put in place prevention and awareness measures to guarantee their protection and ensure that their childhood is not used as a political tool. Children have the right to grow up in a safe and educational environment, without being used for political purposes.
