“Violent political tensions in Kasumbalesa in the DRC: a new challenge for democratic stability”

Activists from Ensemble Pour la République and the UDPS clashed violently this Tuesday in Kasumbalesa, in the Haut-Katanga province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These clashes took place during a demonstration organized by the opposition party Ensemble Pour la République, in preparation for the arrival of their leader, Moïse Katumbi, in the city.

According to testimonies collected on site, a group of young people, wearing the colors of the UDPS, attacked the activists of Ensemble Pour la République. Flags were torn down, offices vandalized and eight activists were injured and taken to hospital.

UDPS leaders in Kasumbalesa deny any involvement of their party in this violence. However, tensions between the two political parties have been palpable for several weeks, in this city which constitutes a key issue in view of the next general elections in the DRC.

These clashes demonstrate the need for greater restraint and a call for the culture of peace and peaceful coexistence during this crucial period for the country. Civil society actors also stressed the need to preserve the physical and moral integrity of individuals, as well as respect for different political opinions.

It is essential to promote a peaceful climate and encourage dialogue between the different political forces present. Political violence can only harm the stability and democracy of the country. It is therefore essential that political leaders commit to preserving harmony in the electoral process and respecting the rights and fundamental freedoms of all citizens.

In conclusion, it is urgent to recall the importance of tolerance, mutual respect and constructive discussion to guarantee a calm and peaceful electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Only true peaceful cohabitation and a serene political climate will make it possible to build a better future for all the country’s citizens.
