“The humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC: thousands of displaced people live in inhuman conditions”

The humanitarian crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo continues. Displaced people from Bulengo, who fled the fighting between the M23 rebels and the Congolese government, suffer from inhuman promiscuity in makeshift houses built from tarpaulins. The health situation is catastrophic with epidemics of cholera and measles which mainly affect women and children. Humanitarians told ACTUALITE.CD that most of those displaced in Bulengo came from villages in Masisi territory, fleeing the advance of M23 rebels.
The Bulengo IDP camp is divided into 426 blocks which each accommodate 60 households, and a single square meter shelter can accommodate up to 5 people. The lack of water, hygiene and sanitation infrastructure is at the root of the epidemics that strike refugees. In addition, the displaced are deprived of drinking water, which forces them to drink impure water from the lake. NGOs have set up clinics to care for cholera and measles patients, but the situation remains alarming with 200 cholera cases per day recorded in March.
The humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC is an emergency, requiring urgent and long-term international assistance. NGOs working in the DRC must continue their work and raise awareness of the need to improve the living conditions of the displaced
