Historic release of members of Bundu dia Kongo and Prophet Joseph Mukungubila in the Democratic Republic of Congo
On November 1, 2023, the Democratic Republic of Congo experienced a major event in the field of human rights. Thanks to the advocacy of Minister Albert Puela, members of Bundu dia Kongo and the movement of Prophet Joseph Mukungubila were released, marking a significant step forward in the fight for justice and national reconciliation.
The President of the Republic Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo suspended the execution of the judgments condemning the followers of Bundu dia Kongo and those of the prophet Joseph Mukungubila, in response to the efforts of the Minister of Human Rights. This decision demonstrates the Head of State’s commitment to decongesting prisons and promoting the fundamental rights of Congolese citizens.
The Minister of Human Rights, responsible for monitoring this presidential order, personally visited the prisons to witness the release of the prisoners. At Makala Central Prison, he was able to see the release of two BDK members, Ngemba Mawete Jean and Nsimba Phanzu, who had been incarcerated for 15 years. Then, at Ndolo prison, he witnessed the release of 5 BDK members and 18 followers of the Prophet Joseph Mukungubila.
In his speech during these releases, Minister Puela expressed his gratitude to the Head of State for this laudable act and called on the beneficiaries of the presidential order to behave responsibly and avoid repeat offenses. He also encouraged the remaining prisoners, who have committed common law offenses, to adopt dignified behavior in the hope of soon benefiting from provisional release, parole or presidential pardon.
The former prisoners expressed their gratitude to the Head of State, Minister Puela and all those who supported them during their period of incarceration. They expressed their commitment to turning the page on their past and contributing positively to Congolese society.
This historic liberation is part of a broader context of the search for justice and reconciliation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It demonstrates the Congolese government’s desire to build a fairer society, where human rights are respected and past abuses are recognized.
In the coming hours, the Minister of Human Rights will travel to Mongala province to witness the release of other followers of Bundu dia Kongo and the Prophet Mukungubila. This additional step confirms the government’s continued commitment to ending injustices and promoting national reconciliation.
In conclusion, the release of members of Bundu dia Kongo and Prophet Joseph Mukungubila in the DRC marks an important turning point in the country’s quest for justice and reconciliation. This historic event paves the way for a better future, where the fundamental rights of all citizens are respected and former prisoners have a chance to reintegrate into society. The DRC thus continues its march towards a united and prosperous nation.
