“Dynamism and Renewal: Joshua Osih elected president of the SDF for a new political era in Cameroon”

Coronation of Joshua Osih: A new beginning for the Social Democratic Front (SDF)

On October 28, the ordinary congress of the Social Democratic Front (SDF) ended in Yaoundé, marking a decisive turning point in the history of the party. Founded in 1990 by the late John Fru Ndi, the SDF has long been the main political group in Cameroon’s opposition, but recent years have been marked by electoral disappointments and internal divisions. The party must now turn the page on its founding president and regain its place on the political scene.

Among the three candidates vying for the presidency of the party, Joshua Nambagi Osih seems the favorite. A nationally renowned MP, Osih wore the colors of the SDF in the last presidential election and has been an established figure in Cameroonian politics for two decades. His challengers, Godden Zama Ndengue and David Shewa, do not have the same notoriety, but all three are from the North-West and South-West, thus guaranteeing territorial continuity in the English-speaking area, a characteristic dear to Fru Ndi .

In addition to the election of the president, the vice-presidents and other members of the executive office were also chosen by the 2,400 delegates from all over Cameroon and the diaspora. The new SDF must now redefine its political line, after having neutralized the dissent of some executives, and prepare a strategy for the coming electoral cycle, which will culminate in 2025 with the presidential election.

Osih’s coronation marks a new beginning for the SDF. It gives the party a charismatic and experienced leader, capable of bringing together and revitalizing its members. It also opens the way to new prospects for political engagement in the country, as the SDF has significant influence as the main opposition party.

In this context of renewal, it is essential that the SDF places emphasis on key issues for the country, such as democratic governance, inclusive economic development and the preservation of fundamental rights. It will also focus on resolving conflicts in the English-speaking regions, working with international organizations and regional partners to find lasting solutions.

The new SDF has a unique chance to mark the political history of Cameroon by offering a credible alternative to the power in place. He must capitalize on the popularity and credibility of his new leader, by proposing concrete solutions to the challenges facing the country and by mobilizing the electorate around his vision.

In conclusion, the coronation of Joshua Osih as leader of the SDF represents a major turning point for the party. With a new charismatic leader and renewed commitment, the SDF can finally turn the page on the difficult years and play a key role in the political life of Cameroon.+
