The railway in the territory of Kamiji, in the province of Lomami, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is currently cut following a landslide. This incident occurred between Kele and Lubi stations, precisely at PK 505 and 506, in the village of Mbukula.
The village chief, Jean Tshibaka Mbukula, said the landslide occurred after the Colombe train from Lubumbashi had passed on its way to Kananga. Fortunately, no serious accidents were reported, as this problem was quickly identified.
Officials from the national railway company of Congo (SNCC) went to the site with the local authorities to assess the damage. According to the village chief Mbukula, the repair work could take one to two months.
This cut in the railway line also led to the blocking of the New Colombe Béton train, which was in Kananga and was to return to Lubumbashi. The return of this train therefore remains uncertain, according to information provided by the SNCC.
It should be noted that the situation of the railway between the stations of Mwene-ditu and Kananga is a recurring problem, due to the lack of maintenance over the years. These sections are in an advanced state of disrepair, which makes rail transport difficult and affects trade.
In the interest of facilitating trade and ensuring the safety of travellers, it is essential that the competent authorities release the necessary funds for the repair and regular maintenance of the railway.
In conclusion, this landslide on the railway line in the Kamiji region represents a major obstacle for rail transport and trade in the region. It is essential that prompt action is taken to repair and maintain this track, in order to guarantee the optimal functioning of the railway network in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
