“Crisis in North Kivu: The escalation of violence between Congolese forces and the M23 endangers the civilian population”

In North Kivu, the situation remains tense between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and the M23 rebellion. The East African Community Regional Force (EAC-RF) recently called for a return to the ceasefire agreement and a cessation of hostilities between the two sides. Faced with this escalation of violence, it is essential to understand the challenges of this complex crisis.

According to reports, a soldier from the Kenyan contingent of the regional force was killed during fighting between the Congolese army and the coalition of local armed groups against the M23 and its allies. This tragic death reflects the violence that reigns in the region.

Clashes have intensified in recent days, with fierce fighting between the M23 rebels and the coalition of armed groups, as well as with the FARDC. The areas of Kibumba, Nyiragongo, Bambo and Bishusha are the main areas of confrontation. The situation is all the more worrying as detonations were heard as far away as Goma, the provincial capital, endangering the civilian population.

To understand this situation, we called on experts in geopolitics and political science. Mwayila Tshiyembe, director of the Pan-African Institute of Geopolitics in Nancy, France, stresses the importance of seeking a peaceful solution and promoting dialogue between the parties involved. He emphasizes the need to identify the root causes of the conflict and put in place lasting reconciliation measures.

Augustin Muhesi, professor of political science at the University of Goma, warns of the humanitarian consequences of these clashes. It underlines the urgency of international intervention to protect civilians and ensure access to humanitarian aid.

Frederick Amani, associate researcher in political science and international relations at the University of Lubumbashi, emphasizes the role of regional and international actors in resolving the crisis. He underlines the need for regional cooperation to stabilize the situation and promote lasting peace.

It is crucial to highlight the seriousness of the situation in North Kivu and raise public awareness of this crisis. Diplomatic efforts and humanitarian actions must be strengthened to put an end to the violence and the suffering of civilian populations. The Congolese authorities, regional and international actors must join forces to find a peaceful and lasting solution to this conflict. Only constructive dialogue and effective cooperation will make it possible to restore stability and peace in the North Kivu region.
